As we all know the corona pandemic has forced many people to stay indoors and socially distance as much as possible. Most people who can work from home have decided to choose this option. You also see less and less people going out for unessential things like shopping. And even when they do, they usually only shop for essential things like food or medicine. So it’s very difficult to conceive that people would actually be interested in shopping for something as unessential as a motorcycle during a pandemic. But interestingly there is data to support that actually more and more people have been thinking of buying their own car or motorcycle over the past few months. And these are people who usually never thought about buying a motorcycle or car before the pandemic. But will all the safety hazards and difficulties and risks of riding public transportation, surprisingly demand for motorcycles among many demographics, especially in cities that were very reliant on public transportation in the past has actually increased. So this the perfect opportunity for motorcycle dealerships and motorcycle importers to seize that they would not have had otherwise.

Which demographics should motorcycle importers focus on

As I mentioned above, many shoppers and commuters who would have traditionally not been looking to buy their own vehicle are not opting for more isolated modes of transportation like riding their own motorcycle or car to take them around rather than using public transportation. There are several demographics that motorcycle importers should focus on as their new target markets. One are people who had a heavy reliance on public transportation in the past. The second group are people who never prioritized buying their own vehicle and generally viewed Uber, Lyft and other ride-hailing apps as more convenient options. Another group are people living in densely populated cities with heavy traffic and also small parking spaces. Another group are business commuters who may prefer to use their own vehicle for short-haul work trips rather than taking a plane, train or car. So for example someone who preferred air travel to get from New York to Boston, may now prefer to ride his/her own motorcycle instead.

What kind of motorcycles should the focus be on?

The answer to this question is very easy. Motorcycle importers should focus on motorcycles that first time buyers would be more interested in buying based on the demographics I just described above. Motorcycles suited for short-haul business trips, motorcycles that are not too expensive so that people who used public transportation because of the cost factor could also afford to buy and motorcycles that are good for densely populated urban areas.
